Graham is calling for Yorkshire Water, the Environment Agency and East Riding Council to come together after residents in Keyingham raised serious concerns about repeated flooding and sewage problems in the village.
Graham was first notified of the issue by Cllr Sean McMaster.
After hearing Sean’s concerns, Graham wrote to residents in Keyingham to ask for their views and experiences. He then met residents in the village on Friday 12 June to hear directly about the problems they are facing.
Residents who responded to Graham reported repeated flooding of gardens, driveways, garages, pavements and roads. Several said sewage or foul water had been involved, with drains and manholes overflowing during heavy rain.
One resident said foul water had come up from manhole covers and surface water drains on their property three times in 21 days. Another said their toilet becomes unusable when it rains because water backs up, while a manhole outside a neighbouring property overflows with toilet paper and sewage.
Other residents raised concerns about blocked drains, poor records of drainage assets, and confusion over whether East Riding of Yorkshire Council or Yorkshire Water is responsible.
Residents also warned that the village’s drainage and sewerage system may not be able to cope with further housing growth.
Concerns were raised about the capacity of the local pumping station, the impact of new developments, and whether recent housing schemes were connected into the right part of the drainage system.
Graham has now requested a meeting with Yorkshire Water, the Environment Agency, East Riding of Yorkshire Council and local representatives so they can agree one clear technical picture of what is happening in Keyingham and what needs to be done.
Graham wants the agencies to answer:
What is causing the sewage and flooding problems
Whether the current sewer and drainage system has enough capacity
What role recent and future development has played
Who approved the connection of new homes into the Osborne Drive drainage system
What immediate work is needed
What long-term investment is required
How the village’s infrastructure should be considered before any further development is approved
Cllr Sean McMaster said: “People in Keyingham are fed up with being passed from one organisation to another while the same problems keep happening.
“Residents have had sewage and flooding affecting their properties, gardens and streets, and they deserve clear answers about why this is happening and what is going to be done.
“The village has grown, more homes are being added, and people quite reasonably want to know whether the drainage and sewerage system can cope.
“I welcome Graham bringing Yorkshire Water, the Environment Agency and East Riding of Yorkshire Council together. We need one agreed view of the problem, who is responsible, and a proper plan to get it sorted.”
Graham said: “Keyingham residents should not have to live with sewage coming up in gardens, streets or homes.
“Sean McMaster raised this with me, so I wrote to residents and met them in the village to hear directly what has been happening.
“They are tired of being passed from one organisation to another. That is why I have asked Yorkshire Water, the Environment Agency, East Riding of Yorkshire Council and local representatives to meet together.
“Keyingham deserves answers, not excuses. I will keep pushing until residents get a proper plan.”
