Work is finally getting underway to repair and reopen the public toilets at Beverley station after Graham pressed those responsible to get the long-running problem sorted.
The toilets have been closed for more than a year, forcing passengers to leave the station and use the facilities at M&S Walk instead.
For older passengers, families and people rushing for a train, that extra journey matters. Graham said a busy station serving Beverley should have decent basic facilities.
Beverley in Bloom first raised the problem with Graham after their own efforts to get the toilets reopened had stalled.
Graham then wrote directly to East Riding Council, the Arch Company and Network Rail to establish who was responsible, what was holding the repairs up and what needed to happen next.
The latest update confirms the project has now moved into the delivery stage.
Additional surveys required for the work have been completed, the station team and local authority have been consulted, and the necessary paperwork and approvals are now in place.
Site facilities are being set up and scaffolding is due to be installed so the repairs can begin safely.
The current timetable is for the work to be completed and the site cleared by the end of September, subject to unforeseen problems.
Graham will continue to follow the work until the toilets are open again.
Graham said:
“These toilets should never have been closed for this long, but what matters now is getting the job finished.
“Beverley in Bloom came to me because they had been pushing for action and getting nowhere. I went to the organisations involved, got them around the problem and kept pressing for a timetable.
“Now the paperwork is done, the scaffolding is going up and the actual repairs are starting.
“That is real progress. I’ll keep on top of it until the work is complete and passengers can use the toilets again.
“People using Beverley station are not asking for anything extravagant. They just expect the basic facilities at an important local station to work, and they are right.”
