Protecting Family Budgets

Protecting Family Budgets

Families across East Yorkshire are under real pressure.

People work hard, pay their taxes and try to do the right thing. But too often, the money does not stretch as far as it used to.

The weekly shop costs more. Filling up the car costs more. Heating the home costs more. Council tax keeps going up. For many households, there is less left at the end of the month.

That is what Graham hears from residents across Beverley and Holderness.

The pressure is felt at home

This is not just a Westminster debate.

It is about everyday choices getting harder.

A parent trying to keep up with the rising cost of food.

A pensioner worrying about how often to turn the heating on.

A family thinking twice before filling up the car as fuel becomes a luxury.

A small business owner trying to manage fair prices while their own bills rise.

Here in Beverley and Holderness, these pressures are sharper.

People rely on fuel for transport to get around our rural villages. Many homes are off the gas grid, stretched by the price of heating oil. When a local service disappears, it means more time, more travel and more strain.

When these costs go up, families feel it straight away.

Graham’s record

Graham has been taking up these issues because they affect daily life here.

He has:

  • Campaigned for lower fuel costs because people in Beverley and Holderness rely on their cars more than people in big cities
  • Opposed changes to Winter Fuel Payments because older residents should not be left worrying about heating their homes
  • Raised the unfairness faced by off-grid households who rely on heating oil and do not get the same protection as those on mains gas
  • Backed local businesses facing sharp rises in business rates, because higher business costs often mean higher prices for families

What Graham will keep campaigning for

Graham’s focus is simple: protect family budgets, keep costs down where possible, and make sure people who work hard and play by the rules get a fair deal.

He will keep pressing for:

  • Fairer treatment for rural households facing higher fuel and heating costs
  • Lower fuel costs for families who rely on their cars
  • Proper support for older residents worried about heating bills
  • Backing for local businesses, because they provide jobs, services and fair prices in our towns and villages
  • Protection for local services, because when a bank, shop, bus route or basic service disappears, residents end up paying more in time, travel and stress

Graham will keep listening to residents and raising these issues in Parliament.

Tell Graham how rising costs are affecting you

Graham wants to hear from residents across Beverley and Holderness.

Are your bills still going up?

Are fuel prices making daily life harder?

Are heating costs a worry?

Has the loss of a local service forced you to travel further?

Tell Graham your experience.

Business Rate Changes for Pubs

The previous Government introduced a new duty system in 2023 which was the biggest reform of duties for more than 140 years and was based on common sense principles of applying duty based on the strength of alcohol to simplify the duty system for businesses and meet public health objectives.
