News Release

Graham has called on Virgin Money to help a 90-year-old constituent who lost money after paying for a funeral plan which did not exist.

The Beverley and Holderness MP has asked the bank to review her case in light of the fraud and her exceptional circumstances. Other banks have refunded customers affected.

It is one of a series of cases Graham has taken up this week as he works to make sure people living in the towns, villages and rural communities of East Yorkshire are heard.

Graham replied to 261 constituent emails during the week, taking up problems ranging from dangerous roads and disability access to anti-social behaviour, missed bin collections and disruption from major infrastructure projects.

In Kiplingcotes, Graham has challenged National Grid over concerns about disruption to a home and business, road closures, contractor conduct and the refusal to install monitoring recommended because of a potential subsidence risk.

In Beverley, he has written to Tesco after a wheelchair user raised concerns that changes to its store have made it harder to access. He has also contacted the Council about broken streetlights and a damaged footpath near Harvest Court, missed bin collections on Sample Avenue and difficulties with the Blue Badge renewal process.

Graham has contacted the Council about speeding and HGV traffic in Bilton and written to the police about dangerous cycling in Beverley town centre. Police have also confirmed that targeted enforcement is under way following concerns Graham raised about anti-social behaviour, drugs and speeding on a Beverley housing estate.

In Wawne, Graham has written to the Parish Council after concerns were raised about children waiting for their school bus without shelter from bad weather.

Some of the individual cases have also raised bigger questions.

Graham has written to a Minister after a constituent highlighted the difficulty of identifying nut-derived oils in cosmetics when ingredients are listed under Latin names.

He has separately raised concerns with Government about public-sector jobs being concentrated in major cities rather than supporting places such as East Yorkshire.

Graham said:

“East Yorkshire is made up of wonderful towns, villages, hamlets and farms, but too often places like ours can feel forgotten by the people making the decisions.

“That is why I take up these cases. Whether it is a 90-year-old who has lost money to fraud, children waiting for a school bus without shelter, a wheelchair user struggling to get around a supermarket or a village worried about speeding traffic, people deserve someone in their corner.

“Sometimes I can take a problem straight to the Council, police or a company and press them to sort it out. Sometimes an individual case exposes something that needs changing nationally.

“My job is to make sure rural East Yorkshire is heard and to stand up for the people who live here.”
