Thank you for contacting me about Jagtar Singh Johal, for whom I share your concern.
I appreciate that you want to see Mr Johal’s case resolved as soon as possible.
The UK has raised Mr Johal’s case with the Government of India on over 100 occasions, and under the last UK Government, Ministers raised his allegations of torture and mistreatment, and his right to a fair trial. It may also reassure you to know that consular staff visit Mr Johal regularly to check on his welfare.
Prior to the General Election 2024, I understand former Foreign Secretary, Lord Cameron, was reviewing the UK’s approach to Mr Johal’s case. The approach that the new Government chooses to take should of course be guided by a thorough assessment of Mr Johal’s best interests.
I will be following developments closely.
Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.
