Graham Stuart, Member of Parliament for Beverley and Holderness, has praised the whole village of Skirlaugh for how it has pulled together to get its new pavilion for its football and cricket clubs installed.

Following a fire, Skirlaugh’s sports clubs were left without a home until the village stepped in to get a new pavilion to serve its clubs.

Following a change in priorities from the Football Foundation from buildings to surfaces, Skirlaugh was in a difficult position. Luckily, the clubs were able to raise the funds locally to cover the £76,500 building.

Local councillors Samantha Whyte and John Holtby were instrumental in getting the funding over the line by convincing East Riding of Yorkshire Council to make sure the money was delivered.

This was enabled by the parish council providing a bridging loan for the pavilion and now the pavilion is up and running, providing a permanent base for Skirlaugh Football and Cricket Clubs.

Beverley and Holderness MP Graham Stuart said: “Everyone involved in Skirlaugh Pavilion rising up from the ashes should be incredibly proud of themselves.

“This is one of those heart-warming tales of a village coming together, with everyone sharing the goal of getting this terrific facility off the ground.

“Everyone who played their part should be proud of this pavilion, and I hope to be able to come and watch some sport here this season.”

Cllr Samatha Whyte said: “What a fantastic facility this is for Skirlaugh, and I’m so proud of the village for getting it together!

“I’m pleased to have been able to play my part in getting this pavilion built, but the praise is really for everyone in Skirlaugh who made it happen!”
