Graham Stuart, Member of Parliament for Beverley and Holderness, was delighted to meet three of his Community Champions in Withernsea on Friday.
Graham met Jayne Nendick, Darren England and Deacon Diane Berry in an action-packed day in Withernsea where he had the opportunity to meet some of Withernsea’s finest unsung heroes.
Graham launched his search for Beverley and Holderness’ Community Champions earlier this year and has awarded certificates to fourteen individuals who have done amazing things for their community.
Jayne Nendick heads the SHoRes Centre in Withernsea, a hub which provides vital support to those most in need. SHoRes provides residents with a social supermarket, financial advice and much more besides.
Diane Berry is a deacon in the Church of England and has supported Withernsea’s Anglican community while St Nicholas’ Church has been without a vicar. Graham was very pleased to hear that Diane will be ordained as a priest next year.
Darren England has provided vital help to Withernsea’s veteran community, being heavily involved with the Withernsea Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club, which Graham visited in January.
Beverley and Holderness MP Graham Stuart said: “It was heart-warming to meet some of our Community Champions in Withernsea on Friday.
“These amazing individuals are often taken for granted, but it takes a serious amount of work to get up every day and make helping others your mission.
“Darren England has made life better for our veterans and, as Honorary President of our Royal British Legion branch in Beverley, I know how important it is that people like Darren are there.
“Diane Berry has kept the church going, in a voluntary capacity, while St Nicholas’ has been without a vicar. For members of the Church of England in Withernsea, Diane has been a terrific spiritual advisor.
“And Jayne Nendick… I just can’t imagine Withernsea without her.
“I’ve loved reading the stories about our Community Champions, and I can’t wait to meet more of them in the weeks and months to come.”
Community Champion Darren England said, “It was a surprise to get the Community Champions Award from Mr Stuart last week.
“The award is not mine but for all the veterans of South Holderness who should be pleased and proud that they have been recognised.”
Deacon Diane Berry said, “I was very surprised to receive a Community Champion certificate with my name on it.
“It is wonderful to have my efforts recognised, having worked hard the past couple of years whilst we have been without a vicar, but I have enjoyed every minute.
“Thank you to whoever nominated me, I am so very grateful.”
Jayne Nendick said, “I love Withernsea, and I’m so touched to have been nominated for this award.
“SHoRes is there for anyone who needs help, and I hope to be able to support this town for years to come.”
