Earlier this week, Graham Stuart met with the head of next generation access at BT to find out more about the plans to roll out superfast broadband across 90% of the constituency.
Commenting Graham said, “BT expects to begin installing the new infrastructure in 2014 with the first properties to see a benefit by early summer. Until surveying work has been completed BT cannot say which properties will benefit when. Once these plans are confirmed East Riding of Yorkshire Council will be releasing the information in phases via the Broadband East Riding website.
“The remaining 10% of properties will gain access to 2 megabit per second (mbps) broadband as part of the project. Increased user numbers and higher speed demand will mean that 2mbps will appear slow by the end of 2015 and BT are working on new technologies to bring faster speeds to the final 10% where possible.
“The timeframe is tight for the European Regional Development Fund that makes up around a third of the project funding and I wanted assurances from BT that they are able to deliver the project on time and within budget.
“Over the past decade broadband has become vital to most of us in our daily lives from work and business to health, education, and leisure. Predictions are that demand for superfast broadband (24mbps and above) is going to rise sharply over the next few years. I am pleased to see the government, industry and local authorities working together to meet this demand to bring a future proof, reliable and affordable service into rural communities."
