Graham Stuart, Member of Parliament for Beverley and Holderness, has called for better rural broadband following his survey of residents.

Graham has long campaigned for rural broadband to be improved, and his recent survey, which attracted 147 responses from across Beverley and Holderness, has shown startling results.

The results, which are available for all to view at www.grahamstuart.com/BroadbandMobileResults, have informed Graham’s views that rural broadband needs more work, and Graham has met with East Riding Council and KCOM to discuss his results, and press for further expansion.

The results show a marked difference between the rural and urban parts of Beverley and Holderness – with average broadband speeds in Beverley, Hedon, Hornsea and Withernsea around 200mbps compared to rural parishes, which average 35.1mbps.

Across Beverley and Holderness, 62 per cent of people have broadband speeds which match the advertised speeds, while in rural areas, this falls to only 40%.

Graham met with KCOM (by far the largest provider of broadband across Beverley and Holderness) in Cherry Burton recently, where new cables have been installed which will improve the picture in that village.

Commenting, Graham said, “Everyone deserves access to good broadband – and I’m grateful to everyone in Beverley and Holderness who grappled with speed tests and looked up their advertised rates to let me know about the internet picture in our area.

“While I’m pleased to be able to say that broadband speeds are by no means bad, there is clearly a disconnect between rural and urban parts of Beverley and Holderness."
