Good attendance at school is one of the simplest ways to ensure great academic progress, and Withernsea High School (WHS) has worked with local MP Graham Stuart to give some of WHS’s attendance champions an unforgettable day in London with a tour of Parliament and lunch with their local MP.

Amelia, Charlotte, Lucy and Molly were treated to a free train journey to London, courtesy of Hull Trains, to see the Palace of Westminster in a private tour which included the Chamber of the Houses of Commons and Lords, the 11th Century Westminster Hall, the Royal Gallery and other rooms full of historical detail.

The visit ended with lunch on the Terrace, overlooking the River Thames with Graham where the four girls had the chance to quiz Graham about local and national politics, education and their aspirations for the future.

The visit celebrated academic responsibility and aimed to inspire the students to remain engaged with current affairs.

Graham is a great supporter of Withernsea High School and has visited many times throughout his twenty years as MP, most recently in March when he supported the school’s Careers Programme.

A former Chairman of the House of Commons Education Selection Committee, Graham is a long-standing advocate for parents and students in Parliament. He recently led a debate on Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) funding, highlighting that the East Riding gets the lowest level of per-pupil funding in England for pupils with SEND.

Graham said: “It was a pleasure to meet Amelia, Charlotte, Lucy and Molly to Parliament. Attendance matters. Their commitment to their education and their futures is truly commendable and it’s important we recognise and reward young people who turn up to school every day.

“I’m grateful to Hull Trains for making this unforgettable day possible by offering free rail tickets.”
