Molescroft doesn’t want a tip on Ings Road. It doesn’t want the noise and light pollution. It doesn’t want the traffic. It doesn’t want to lose agricultural land.
At the East Riding’s Planning Committee last Thursday, that lesson was heard loud and clear. The decision has been deferred and the Council is in no doubt that it hasn’t done enough to satisfy the genuine concerns of residents.
Mike Roach, community organiser of the No Tip Please WhatsApp group’s speech to the Planning Committee summarised the concerns of residents perfectly. The people of Molescroft aren’t NIMBYs: they’re proud of their community but worried this proposed replacement for the recycling centre at Weel isn’t the best possible site.
I want to put on record my gratitude to the campaigners, led ably by Mike, with whom I worked closely back in November to set up and arrange a massively well-supported public meeting. We were determined to make sure your voice was not ignored.
And it worked. Look how you took up the baton and ran with it. Over 1,900 people objected to the plans. That’s astonishing.
No matter what happens, the views of residents have been taken into account – which is exactly how democracy must work.
Deferral means the decision on whether or not to go ahead is delayed while new, more acceptable, proposals are worked out and brought back to your representatives on the Planning Committee. This won’t be for some months.
