Graham Stuart MP with Jayne Nendick

Graham Stuart has paid tribute to Jayne Nendick, Chief Executive of the South Holderness Resource Centre (SHoRes Centre) in Withernsea, describing her as “one of the most dedicated and effective community leaders anywhere in the country.”

This year marks 20 years since Jayne founded the SHoRes Centre, following a long campaign to create a facility that would serve the whole South Holderness community. Under her leadership, SHoRes has become a vital community hub, delivering services including job coaching, social care, food support and community programmes.

At the heart of this work is the SHoRes Food Pantry, which supports more than 1000 people. During the cost of living crisis, Jayne and her dedicated team have worked tirelessly to keep the pantry running despite rising pressures on local donors, recently securing £5000 through a community fundraiser to ensure families in Withernsea continue to have access to affordable, nutritious food.

Jayne has also overseen the growth of the SHoRes Diner, a Withernsea institution since 2007. The diner serves more than 600 people each week during the summer season over 300 throughout the rest of the year. For many, it offers a hot meal, for others, it provides a fresh start. More than 90% of the staff who work there were previously unemployed and face significant physical or mental health challenges. Jayne has a remarkable ability to see potential in people, often long before they see it in themselves.

Her leadership extends into social care through SHoRes Homecare, launched in 2007, and rated ‘Good’ in all areas by the Care Quality Commission earlier this year. The service supports around 90 clients each year, with all surplus reinvested into community development and training for future carers.

Many members of the SHoRes team have personal experience of dementia, either living with the condition themselves or caring for loved ones. This inspired Jayne to secure funding for the SHoRes Dementia Café, which supports a dozen people living with dementia and their carers, offering respite, guidance and a safe, understanding space during what is often an overwhelming journey.

Graham said: “Jayne Nendick is one of the most dedicated and effective community leaders anywhere in the country. Her work has transformed lives, strengthened Withernsea and given countless people purpose and opportunity. Her passion for making a different remains undiminished and she shows no sign of slowing down, still working over 60 hours a week to deliver the support our community needs. Jayne is an inspiration to all who meet her, and I am very proud we can call her one of our own.”
