Graham backs call to protect specialist support for children with complex SEND needs

Families across Beverley and Holderness are struggling to get the right support for children with special educational needs.

That is the reality being reported again and again. Long waits. Placements that do not work. Parents fighting the system just to be heard.

Graham has joined a cross-party call to make sure children with the most complex needs are not left behind as the Government reforms the SEND system.

He attended a Westminster event, SEND Matters: The Voices We Are Not Hearing, chaired by broadcaster Nick Ferrari, where parents, teachers and young people shared first-hand experiences of how the system is failing.

The message was clear: reform is needed, but it must include proper protection and funding for children with the most complex needs.

This is not a small issue. Around 1.7 million children in England now have special educational needs, and demand for support continues to rise.

Graham has been raising these concerns for years.

He has pushed ministers to fix the unfair funding system, including highlighting cases where children locally receive far less support than in other parts of the country.

He has called for an urgent review of SEND funding and worked with colleagues to make the case for fairer support for East Riding families.

Alongside this, Graham continues to work with local schools and young people across the constituency, supporting staff, recognising achievement and pressing for better outcomes for every child.

The concern is simple. When children with complex needs are placed in settings that cannot support them, it fails everyone. The child, the family and the system as a whole.

But when support is right, the results can be life-changing.

Graham said: “I went to the SEND Matters event in Parliament to listen, and what I heard was hard to ignore.

“Families here are being let down by a system that cannot keep up. Parents should not have to fight this hard to get the right support for their child.

“I have been pushing for fairer funding and better support for years, and I will keep doing so.

“As these reforms move forward, we must make sure children with the most complex needs are not overlooked.”
