I appreciate that this is an issue about which many people hold strong and sincerely held views, and I respect that you have taken the time to share yours with me. I have received correspondence from constituents on both sides of this debate.
While I always listen carefully to the views that are put to me, my responsibility is to consider the evidence, the arguments and the detail of the legislation before reaching my own judgment. Having considered the Bill carefully, I remain concerned that the necessary safeguards are not in place. For that reason, I cannot in good conscience support the Bill in its current form.
I recognise that others, including some other countries, have reached different conclusions on assisted dying. However, my decision is based on my assessment of the legislation before Parliament and the potential implications of introducing such a significant change to the law.
