I share your concern about the dangers of unsafe gas work, which can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, gas leaks, fires and explosions. It is worrying to see data from Gas Safe Register showing that nearly seven in ten appliances fitted illegally in 2017 were unsafe, with particularly high rates in urban areas. No one should be put at risk in their own home because of unqualified or unscrupulous work.
I would encourage anyone having gas work done to always check that their engineer is on the Gas Safe Register, and to report any suspected illegal work to help protect others. It’s vital that the Government, the Health and Safety Executive and industry continue to work together to raise awareness and tackle this problem robustly. I will always support efforts to strengthen safety standards and enforcement to keep people safe in their homes.
