Raising the Age of Social Media to 16

I supported the proposal to raise the minimum age for access to social media platforms to 16, along with stronger measures to protect children online. I am disappointed that the House of Commons did not support these changes when they were put forward.

Families are right to expect stronger protection for children from harmful and addictive online content driven by algorithms. Parents, teachers and campaigners have raised serious concerns, and there is a clear case for action.

The Bill will now return to the House of Lords for further consideration, continuing the final stages of parliamentary “ping-pong” between the two Houses. This back-and-forth is frustrating for many families and teachers who want to see agreement reached and action taken without further delay.

I will continue to press for faster and stronger action from the Government, and I hope that when these measures return there will be a willingness across Parliament to move this forward.

In the meantime, I would encourage you to respond to the Government’s consultation so that your voice can be heard. The consultation closes on 26 May. You can take part here: https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/growing-up-in-the-online-world-a-national-consultation
