Graham Stands Up For Veterans Facing Risk Of Being Dragged Through Courts

Graham has voted against changes to Northern Ireland legacy laws, warning they could expose veterans to renewed legal action over events from decades ago.

He said the legislation risks reopening old cases and allowing repeated investigations into the same incidents.

Alongside his work in Parliament, Graham supports veterans locally. As Chairman of the Beverley branch of the Royal British Legion, he works with veterans and their families across the constituency. He also backs Veterans Breakfast Clubs, which bring former service personnel together and provides ongoing support.

In Withernsea, he has worked with Darren England to clean and restore graves as part of Commonwealth War Graves efforts.

Kemi Badenoch has committed that a future Conservative Government will repeal the legislation and replace it with a fairer system that protects veterans from repeated legal claims.

Graham is also pushing for better living standards for serving personnel at Defence School Leconfield, arguing that respect must apply to those serving today as well as those who have served.

People can support the campaign and sign the petition at backourveterans.com

Graham said: “I voted against this Bill because it risks reopening old wounds and placing unfair legal burdens on those who served our country.

“Our veterans should not be dragged through courts years later for doing their duty.

“We need to protect our veterans, not prosecute them.”

Darren England: “So many of our veterans fought bravely in Northern Ireland and it’s just wrong that they can be prosecuted decades after the fact for no good reason.

“I’m grateful for people standing up for our veterans in Parliament, like Graham, and I hope people can take a minute to sign the petition.”

James Cartlidge MP, Shadow Defence Secretary, said: “This Bill will do nothing but divide our communities and drag brave veterans into court decades after their service.

“The Government has attempted to cede our sovereignty and prioritised welfare over defence. They cannot be trusted to defend those who defended us.

“The Conservatives have held them to account at every stage of this Bill, and we are the only party with a clear plan to fund our Armed Forces and protect our veterans.”

Alex Burghart MP, Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary, said:"The Government must kill this Bill and end its hounding of our brave veterans.

"This Bill will reopen vexatious litigation against those who courageously served during the Troubles and laid the foundation for peace.

"The Conservatives have led the fight against this Bill. We have been unequivocally clear; we completely oppose this and will move immediately to reverse it if we return to Government."
