Graham has branded Chancellor Rachel Reeves as the Buy Now Pay Later Chancellor as her much anticipated spending review sees billions of borrowing to plough money into Labour-run cities while rural areas like Beverley and Holderness are ignored by this Labour chancellor.
Reeves’ much anticipated spending review saw the under-pressure Chancellor announce billions of spending on housing in Labour-run cities and on Net Zero while agriculture and transport funding has been slashed.
The Chancellor was recently forced into a u-turn on her decision to scrap the Winter Fuel Payment for millions of pensioners. Graham has been a strong critic of the Chancellor’s prioritisation of pay hikes for striking train drivers over the elderly.
Graham organised a local petition of over 1,100 people against Reeves’ cut to the Winter Fuel Payment and has repeatedly spoken out against it in Parliament, as well as organising protests against the decision in Beverley and Withernsea.
The campaigning MP is deeply concerned that the government, less than a year into its term in office, has imposed a new Family Farm Tax, slashed hospitality rates relief, hiked the Jobs Tax and left people worse off.
Unemployment was recently revealed to have increased by around 300,000 since the election last year while growth continues to flatline as the cost of living increases with inflation almost doubled since the Conservatives left office.
Graham said, “Reeves is the Buy Now Pay Later Chancellor, the Klarna Chancellor, the Chancellor who told us she’d protect our public finances and that you could trust her with your money.
“Well, it turns out it’s same old Labour. Putting unaffordable spending on the national credit card is one thing, but telling us she’s a disciplined Chancellor who won’t hike taxes as she spends like there’s no tomorrow?
“I’m worried about rural East Yorkshire. We need support. We need investment. We need hope, but this government and this Chancellor is incapable of giving it.”
