Graham hosted a demo against the Winter Fuel Payment cut on Saturday in rainy Withernsea.
The campaigning MP, who has been at the forefront of fighting the cut of £300 to any pensioner not in receipt of Pension Credit, organised the protest after many people from Withernsea wrote to ask whether he would organise a demo in the seaside town after September’s well-attended protest in Beverley.
Over 1,100 have signed Graham’s petition against the Labour government’s decision to cut the Winter Fuel Payment, worth up to £300 to pensioners, against what it said in its election manifesto.
Recent analysis has suggested that 84% of disabled pensioners will lose their payments.
Four in five pensioners living below or just above the poverty line will lose their payments.
The Government's own Social Security Advisory Body has warned that rushing this change has left millions of pensioners unprepared to lose their payments.
Graham will continue to amplify the views of residents of Beverley and Holderness in Parliament on this, building on his many previous interventions.
Last Saturday he also met residents at Beverley’s St Ellen’s Court, a Joseph Rowntree retirement community. The residents there were united in their opposition to the measure.
With the Budget fast approaching, time is running out for residents to sign the petition, which can be found at www.grahamstuart.com/KeepPensionersWarm.
Graham Stuart MP said, “It was great that so many people braved the rain and wind to make their voice heard: that the government is wrong to cut the Winter Fuel Payment.
“This goes against what they promised us in their election manifesto, and I don’t think that’s what people voted Labour to get.
“After the Conservatives hauled 200,000 people out of poverty, it’s a slap in the face for some of the poorest pensioners to have this lifeline taken away.
“People in Beverley and Holderness know cutting the Winter Fuel Payment is wrong. People around the country know this is wrong. And I believe that, with the pressure we’re exerting on the government, they are coming to learn this is wrong.
“Sign the petition and make our voice as loud as possible.”
