Over the weekend MPs from East Yorkshire launched a public petition opposing the imposition of VAT on static holiday caravans.
Local MP Graham Stuart held a street surgery in Withernsea where members of the public were invited to register their opposition to a 20 percent increase in VAT on static holiday caravans which was proposed in the 2012 Budget. Later that same day Labour MPs held an event promoting the petition in Hull.
The Beverley and Holderness MP said, “This public petition to Parliament is different from the e-petitions that are available on the Government’s epetitions.direct.gov.uk website and those concerned about the issue of taxes on caravans should sign the petition for their constituency to provide their Member of Parliament with the ammunition they need to fight the caravan tax and demonstrate the strength of local feeling.
“We learned last week that there is widespread, cross-party concern about this tax rise in Parliament. This petition will allow those at the grassroots level to register their opposition so that we can all speak with one clear voice to protect jobs and promote economic growth. The Government must get the message that the caravan tax is not the right solution to combating the mountain of debt we have inherited from Labour.”
Graham continued, “I hope anyone concerned about this tax increase on caravans will download the petition, fill in the name of their local constituency, and get all of their colleagues, friends, and family to sign. Everyone should return the petition to their local MP or my office in the House of Commons by Friday, 11th May so that we can present the petitions in the House of Commons and send a strong message that the fight against the caravan tax is far from over.”
Graham’s successful campaigns in the last Parliament included protecting community hospitals, defeating legislation on home education, stopping the incinerator at Saltend and saving the Beverley Pasture Masters. Since 2010 he has won the battle for lower Humber Bridge tolls and successfully persuaded the government to improve the A164 and build the Beverley Bypass.
