Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley and Holderness, is encouraging local people to respond to a survey that is asking for their views on tidal flooding.
The survey, which is open throughout September, is being run by Humber 2100+ - formerly the Humber Flood Risk Management Strategy - which is a partnership between 12 local authorities, the Humber LEP and the Environment Agency with the aim of addressing the risk of flooding.
Although significant investment has already been put into improving the region’s defences, the risk of flooding can never be removed entirely and it is important that work continues to try to mitigate the risk.
Graham commented: “Your responses to this survey will inform their work going forward and let them know what matters to you in the area, so I’d really encourage as many people as possible to submit their views.
“Ever since the devastating floods in 2007, I have worked to improve our flood defences any way I could. When I was Chair of the River Hull Advisory Board, we carried out dredging, raised riverbanks, put in pumping stations and even removed sunken vessels to increase water flow.
“By 2021, over £150 million will have been invested in flood defence improvements but with climate change making storm surges ever more likely, it is vitally important that we carry on this good work and I will always do my utmost to support the Humber 2100+ partnership at a government level.
More than half a million people live around the Humber, which is the largest port in the country and is responsible for a quarter of the UK’s energy supply. The survey can be found on the Environment Agency’s website at https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/HumberStrategySurvey/.
