Yesterday Graham Stuart, the MP for Beverley and Holderness, congratulated the Burstwick Flood Action Group and the Environment Agency on the opening of the Burstwick flood defence system.
Richard Benyon, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Natural Environment and Fisheries at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, was on hand in Burstwick to meet community volunteers and activists, as well as workers from the Environment Agency, who have been able to work successfully together to secure a new £3 million flood defence scheme for the area.
Graham said, “It is great news that the Minister is visiting the constituency on this happy occasion. Many people in Burstwick have worked extraordinarily hard, with relentless enthusiasm, to ensure Burstwick never experiences the type of flooding it saw in 2007.”
The Minister added, “Some smart engineering and a lot of community spirit means that homes and businesses in Burstwick are twenty times less likely to flood.”
The Minister’s visit comes after Ron Smith, the Chairman of the Burstwick United Flood Action Group invited him to visit the village to help spread the message that Burstwick is a desirable and dry place to live.
