Graham Stuart was at the Westwood to support the monthly 5K Your Way event at the Beverley Park Run.
The Beverley Parkrun was set up in 2019 and was a huge success from the outset, with around four hundred attending the first run.
The weekly event, taking place every Saturday at 9am at the Westwood, is completely volunteer-run, with 81 people regularly giving up their Saturday mornings to support the run. On average, 215 runners and walkers take part in the free 5K run.
The 5K Your Way group, which joins the weekly Park Run in their bright blue shirts on the last Saturday of every month, invited Graham to see the incredible spirit on display.
Graham was there to cheer the 5K Your Way runners along, including parkrun stalwart Allyson Kent who had just completed her 50th parkrun (and achieved her personal best of 35:37 – up 30 seconds on the previous week).
Allyson started park running after getting a cancer diagnosis, and is now an ambassador for 5K Your Way.
Beverley and Holderness MP Graham Stuart said: “Exercise is at the heart of a healthy life, and 5K Your Way gives everyone a great opportunity to get out of bed on a Saturday morning, for a great cause.
“It was a pleasure to be out on the Westwood to support 5K Your Way and the Beverley parkrun – which has certainly grown since I was there in its very early days.
“The volunteers were brilliant and it’s such a professional outfit.
“Why not give it a go – walkers and runners are both very welcome for a 5K on a Saturday morning and the community spirit is there in full force.”
5K Your Way’s Allyson Kent said, “Cancer affects so many people now, (1 in 2 people) and we need to get the message out there that exercise and moving, helps with side effects from treatment, our mental health and improved outcomes for people.
“5kyourway is a supportive community that inspires and empowers people impacted by cancer to live an active and fulfilling lifestyle and meets on the last Saturday in the month.”
