Graham Stuart, Member of Parliament for Beverley and Holderness, learned about the life-saving work of Patrington’s firefighters during his tour of Patrington Fire Station.
During the visit Graham sat in one of the service’s newest fire engines, which can transport eight personnel and is equipped with a Godiva water pump capable of firing 3000 litres of water per minute. He used a hand-held thermal imaging camera, which allows the crew to locate casualties in smoke and darkness and was shown the breathing equipment firefighters need to enter smoke filled buildings.
When speaking to the crew, Graham asked them what the hardest part of their job is and was told it was being awakened at 3am in the middle of winter to respond to an emergency call.
Graham met the Humberside Fire Service Area Manager of Emergency Response, Jason Kirby, Group Manager Vicky Shakesby, Station Manager Mario Ellison and the on-call crew. He was accompanied by Councillors Lyn Healing and Sean McMaster.
Established in 1959, Patrington Fire Station serves the village and the surrounding area. Last year the crew of 10 firefighters, two crew managers and watch manager responded to 62 incidents across the village and surrounding areas, which included 10 fires.
Mario Ellison, Station Manager at Patrington Fire Station said: “It was a fantastic opportunity to welcome Graham and show him Patrington Fire Station, demonstrating how we work with the local community and partner agencies to help keep everyone safe.”
South East Holderness Ward Councillor Lyn Healing commented: “As a member of Humberside Authority Committee I am aware of the wonderful work our firefighters carry out on a daily basis. Not only do they carry out firefighting duties they are heavily involved in working within the community, visiting residents to advise on fire safety plus schools, businesses, Councils and supporting community events just to name a few of their extra duties.”
South East Holderness Ward Councillor Sean McMaster added: “It was an inspirational visit to Patrington Fire Station. We were delighted to receive a friendly welcome from firefighters based at Patrington and Withernsea and to be shown around the station and equipment.”
Beverley and Holderness MP Graham Stuart said: “I am very grateful for the work firefighters across Beverley and Holderness do to keep us safe. It was brilliant to have the opportunity to use some of their life-saving equipment and to hear first-hand what it is really like responding to emergencies.”
