Graham Stuart MP has said the high turnout at Saturday’s “Save Our MIU” campaign rally at Hornsea Hospital shows that his constituents want local health bosses to think again about plans to reshape health services in East Yorkshire.
Saturday’s rally, which was attended by some 200 people, was held to show support for keeping the Minor Injuries Units in Hornsea and Withernsea open. It was attended by Graham, Hornsea Mayor Lee Walton, Withernsea Mayor Matthew Lloyd and East Riding of Yorkshire Councillors including Lynn Healing, Arthur Hodgson, Brian Skow and Barbara Jefferson.
Support for the rally came from Hornsea Hospital League of Friends and Withernsea and District Health Forum.
Thousands of people have now signed the petition protesting against the East Riding Clinical Commissioning Group’s proposed closure programme. People can add their support online by signing up on Graham's website homepage (www.grahamstuart.com).
Graham said, “There was a terrific turnout at the Save Our MIU rally, with people of all ages coming together to ask our local health service chiefs to think again about forcing them to travel miles into Hull for treatment. With a rising budget, I don’t believe the East Riding Clinical Commissioning Group should be contemplating scaling back rural services in this way.
“On Saturday the people of Hornsea showed that they desperately want to retain Minor Injuries care in their town. Like Withernsea, this is a place with an elderly population and relatively low levels of car ownership. As local doctors have said, the CCG’s plans simply don’t make sense and there is still ample time for them to turn them around – our campaign will be keeping up the pressure throughout the summer.”
