Withernsea High School invited local MP Graham Stuart to talk about job opportunities as part of its on-going focus on preparing its students for the world of work and life beyond school.
Graham is working with around fifty local businesses to see whether they can provide work experience opportunities for Withernsea High students.
Pupils were fascinated by his story, from publisher to politician, and heard his advice on how to find rewarding careers locally.
Graham took questions from pupils for 10 minutes, including from Max Curtis-Davis, who is very interested in starting his own business. Graham said that any budding business owner should do their research, learn about how to market a product and selling yourself to potential customers. Graham told Max and the other students that hard work and perseverance is essential for success.
Careers leader Viki Foster does a great job supporting work experience, a vital way to get young people to think about future careers, but the school simply can’t provide placements for every student.
Graham hopes that by working with local businesses the school will be able to offer as many students as possible the chance to do meaningful and interesting work experience placements in Year 10.
Graham Stuart, Member of Parliament for Beverley and Holderness, commented, “Withernsea High School has a first-rate careers leader in Viki Foster, and I want to continue to do all I can to support Withernsea’s young people find good jobs locally.
“Whether that’s in construction or business; tourism, transport or working on the Energy Estuary, I want everyone in Withernsea and beyond to have the ability to get a great job locally.
“Success in the world of work starts with good work experience, and I’m determined to see more youngsters secure placements in the area.
“I’ll be working hard to see pupils and businesses benefit by welcoming students into the workplace.”
Viki Foster, Withernsea High School Careers Adviser said, “It was great to have Graham speak to our pupils about careers, and we’re so grateful for all he does for the town.
“Pupils from Withernsea High School are prepared for the world of work, and we hope as many as possible can have jobs locally, if they so choose.”
“We are incredibly grateful for Graham’s continued support for the school as we work to provide the best possible outcomes for our students.”
