Welcome to the latest edition of my monthly newsletter. This month I had the privilege of moving the Humble Address after the Queen’s Speech, I visited Molescroft Primary School to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee Day with the pupils there, and I welcomed the Energy Minister Greg Hands to Saltend Chemicals Park to show him how Yorkshire and the Humber is leading the way in helping the UK to achieve Net Zero by 2050.
Moving the Humble Address following the Queen’s Speech
Following the Queen’s Speech, I had the great honour of moving the Humble Address at the start of the new Parliamentary session. In my speech I expressed my support for the government’s ambitious legislative agenda and gave advice to people considering a career in politics. I also spoke about my campaign to keep community hospitals in Beverley and Holderness open when I was first elected as an MP for the constituency, and the continued importance of supporting the people of Ukraine.
Molescroft Primary School Platinum Jubilee Party Day
I enjoyed visiting Molescroft Primary School to join in with their Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The day started with a whole school assembly during which I spoke about Her Majesty the Queen’s role as the Defender of our Democracy. I was then given a tour of the activities that had been organised for the children, which included a mini Fun Fair, a street party lunch and a range of traditional party games for everyone to enjoy. It was a great day and I would like to thank the Headteacher Michael Loncaster and everyone at Molescroft Primary School for making me feel so welcome.
Visiting Saltend Chemicals Park with Energy Minister Greg Hands
It was great to welcome the Energy Minister, Greg Hands, to Beverley and Holderness this month for a tour of Saltend Chemicals Park. During our visit we learned about the exciting energy transition opportunities that are in the pipeline for Saltend and met several of the apprentices who are learning and training there. I look forward to seeing how the project progresses and hearing about the many high paid, high skill jobs that will be created by the Humber leading the way in the government’s aim to make the UK Net Zero by 2050.
Asking the Prime Minister To Speed Up The Rollout of Evusheld
At PMQs I asked the Prime Minister to take personal charge of making Evusheld, a new COVID antibody treatment, available to immuno-compromised patients who cannot be vaccinated. Without it, many of them cannot safely leave their homes because of the lack of protection they have against COVID. Therefore, I asked the Prime Minister to personally intervene so that people like my constituent, Scott, can get access to Evusheld immediately so that they can enjoy their freedom just like the rest of us. I look forward to receiving updates from the Department of Health and Social Care about this soon.
Visit to DRAX Power Station
Earlier this month I visited Drax Power Station to discuss how it will help the UK to improve its energy security and achieve its aim of being Net Zero by 2050. I was given a tour of the site and spoke with a range of staff members to learn more about their ambitious decarbonisation project and the wide ranging economic and environmental benefits it will bring to both Beverley and Holderness and the whole of Yorkshire and the Humber.
Welcoming Cherry Tree Youth Club to the Houses of Parliament for National Awards Ceremony
I was absolutely delighted to welcome representatives from the Cherry Tree Youth Club and some of their young people to Parliament for the Kids Count Inspiration Awards Ceremony. I was very proud to present a certificate to them for being highly commended in these awards for the ‘Best Contribution by a Community Group’ category; they should be proud of the difference they make in this deprived local community in Beverley.
Chairing a Public Meeting about Anti Social Behaviour in Beverley
Over recent months I have had many people contact me with concerns about the levels of anti-social behaviour in Beverley. Anti-social behaviour can take such a devastating toll on those affected, which is why I brought residents, the Police and the Council together to discuss this issue and find a way forward. Following the meeting, a list of actions for the Council and Police were agreed, including investigating CCTV capabilities in the area and potential venues for a new youth club. A follow up meeting will take place in June.
Parliamentary Coronavirus Memorial Quilt Competition
I recently launched my Parliamentary Coronavirus Quilt Competition for my constituents to participate in. The Quilt is a cross-party project that is being led by Dawn Butler MP to encourage us to come together to remember those loved and lost during the pandemic. Each MP has been asked to provide a square patchwork block measuring 6 inches square to the quilt to represent what the experience of the pandemic has meant to them. The deadline to enter is Friday 3rd June and you can find more information about the competition here: https://www.grahamstuart.com/news/graham-stuart-mp-launches-parliamentary-coronavirus-memorial-quilt-competition-beverley-and
Welcoming National Farmers Union Representatives to Parliament
I was pleased to be able to invite representatives from the National Farmers Union branch in Beverley and Holderness to the Houses of Parliament for a tour and Question and Answer session. I will take onboard the important points that they raised during the meeting and I look forward to continuing my work with them in the future.
