News that the final stretch of flood defence for Burstwick has been approved by planners has been welcomed by Beverley and Holderness MP Graham Stuart.
Work on a section of the defences, being built by the Environment Agency, had been delayed when Sport England objected to the loss of part of the village playing fields. Following submissions from villagers and local councillors the objection was withdrawn.
Graham said: "This is good news for those who were so badly affected by the floods in 2007. Work was desperately needed in Burstwick and that can now be carried out - it is just a shame that it takes so long and seems to have run into so many problems. Householders have been, and are, living with the constant fear of a repeat of 2007 until the work is completed."
Work on all the Burstwick flood defences has been stopped due to the bad weather, but it is expected it will start again by March.
The Environment Agency has promised to move onto the site rapidly and plug any gaps and bring in extra pumps should the need arise before the flood defences are completed.
