Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley and Holderness, has welcomed the Government’s decision to extend the £2 bus fare cap, keeping cheaper bus journeys across Beverley and Holderness until December 2024.
Following the Government’s decision to reinvest £36 billion in HS2 funding in ‘Network North’, the cheap fares will remain in place across most of England.
This investment takes total funding for the £2 fare policy to £600 million.
Graham is a long-standing supporter of improving transport in the East Riding, being a strong supporter of buses, roads (especially the recent £40 million investment in Jock’s Lodge) and reinstating the York to Hull railway.
Commenting, Graham said, “£2 bus fares make a real difference to people’s lives in Beverley and Holderness, so I’m delighted that this has been extended to December 2024.
“Buses are vital to residents of Beverley, Hedon, Hornsea, Withernsea and all the villages around Beverley and Holderness. Keeping the fares down will make a real difference to the lives of the thousands of people who use them every day.”
Commenting, Transport Secretary, Mark Harper, said: “Buses are the most popular form of public transport and help people across the country get to work, attend medical appointments, and see loved ones–that’s why we are extending the ‘Get Around for £2’ scheme all the way to 31 December 2024.
“Extending the £2 bus fare cap has only been possible with the redirected HS2 funding secured by this Government making the right long-term decisions for a brighter future, delivering immediate benefits and helping people save money.”
