Graham Stuart, Member of Parliament for Beverley and Holderness, has welcomed the Government’s Plan for Water which includes £1.6 billion of investment into vital infrastructure to improve the quality of our rivers and lakes.
The Government has announced its Plan for Water to achieve cleaner, more plentiful water for households and businesses across the UK. It will ensure water pollution is tackled in multiple ways including a public consultation on a ban on the use of plastic in wet wipes, additional funding for farmers to help them use water more efficiently and a new Water Restoration Fund, which will ensure polluters pay for the damage they cause the environment.
The £1.6 billion of investment, which take place over the next two years, will ensure improvements are made sooner to address the unacceptable levels of pollution in our country’s waterways and secure future water supplies. Companies will commit £1.1 billion to help eliminate harm caused by storm overflows, £400 million on water resilience schemes and £160 million to help reduce nutrient pollution.
Water Minister Rebecca Pow said: “These new schemes will help accelerate the delivery of the urgent improvements we need to protect our environment. The investment set out here will also provide an important boost for regional jobs, businesses and local communities. It builds on our commitments in our five year strategy, our Environmental Improvement Plan, as well as our upcoming Plan for Water to tackle pollution, reduce water consumption and protect our waters.”
Graham Stuart commented: “Everyone in Beverley and Holderness has the right to clean and plentiful water. That is why I’m proud that the Government is delivering for us through its Plan for Water. Last year 93% of bathing waters in the UK were rated good or excellent and with extra investment in new projects and additional support for our brilliant farmers, we will make our country’s water supply even better now and for future generations.”
