Graham Stuart, Member of Parliament for Beverley and Holderness, visited Hornsea First Aid Centre to thank the volunteers for their tireless work in the community.
The Centre was founded in 2018 following the closure of the Minor Injuries Unit in the town, with over 30 volunteers including welcomers and qualified First Aiders. They provide treatment for a variety of injuries, including sprains, strains, allergic reactions, burns, and fractures.
Graham met some of the group’s volunteers, who told him about the important work that the Centre carries out in Hornsea, treating over 750 patients this year alone. He also listened to the volunteers' continuing concerns regarding the unsuitability of their current site, a portacabin in Tesco carpark, which has no electricity and is difficult to keep warm. This forces many of the older volunteers to take the winter months off, forcing the centre to reduce its opening hours.
Graham has been working with the group and East Riding of Yorkshire Council over the last few months to find a new home for the First Aid Centre. He will continue to do this along with the Deputy Leader of ERYC, Charlie Dewhirst, to enable the team to provide vital care for the community no matter the weather.
Rosie Bullard, Spokesperson for the Trustees of the Centre, commented: “We were delighted to host Graham at the Centre and we really appreciate his dedication to helping us find a more permanent home. This is crucial so we can continue to deliver a high-quality minor injuries service for the people of Hornsea throughout the year.”
Deputy Leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Charlie Dewhirst, said: “The First Aid Centre is providing a fantastic service for local people in Hornsea but it needs to secure a long term future. I will be working hard with the Trustees and the Council to identify and secure a suitable site so they can continue to provide first aid for many more years to come.”
Beverley and Holderness MP Graham Stuart commented: “The team at Hornsea First Aid Centre have been doing incredible work over the past five years and I was delighted to have the chance to thank them for all they do. I will be working with the Deputy Leader of ERYC and Parliamentary candidate for Bridlington & The Wolds, Charlie Dewhirst, to help them find a permanent home for their vital work.”
