Beverley and Holderness MP, Graham Stuart, met with horticulturists in his constituency to discuss the challenges and opportunities that the industry is facing.
Formed in 1990, Growco is an organisation run by growers across the UK that specialises in growing and marketing a range of fresh produce including cucumbers, round tomatoes, baby plum tomatoes and lettuce. One of their members is Anchor Nurseries Ltd, which is based in Woodmansey in East Yorkshire. They specialise in growing British cucumbers and are always looking for new ways to innovate and ensure that British cucumbers are grown to the highest quality using the most efficient methods possible.
Graham met with Patrick Bromwich, who is the Managing Director of Growco, and James Broekhuizen, who is the Manager of Anchor Nurseries, to discuss the challenges and opportunities that the industry is facing. They spoke about a range of topics including the availability of labour, post Brexit trading and increasing energy costs.
Following his meeting, Graham said: “I was pleased to meet both Patrick and James to listen to their concerns. It is very important that the UK has a thriving horticultural sector and I will look into the points that they raised to see what long term solutions can be found.”
