Graham Stuart, Member of Parliament for Beverley and Holderness, gave a Careers Assembly to Withernsea High School’s Board for Change to inspire them as they form their career plans.
The Board for Change is made up of 40 student representatives from each year group who meet regularly to discuss how to make a positive difference in the school. Graham spoke to them and shared his career journey from starting his own publishing business while at university to being their MP. He told the pupils that they can achieve their goals if they work hard and aim high.
Withernsea High’s pupils had lots of interesting questions for Graham, including how they should use their position on the Board for Change to make a difference to the school. Graham told them that to do this they needed to be “investigative, open-minded, persistent and brave.” He explained that while delivering change was often difficult, by working together with good people you can achieve great things for those you are trying to help.
This is the latest event run by Withernsea High School to give their pupils the best career advice possible. Last month they held a fantastic Careers Fair with representatives from the NHS, RWE Renewable Energy, Humberside Fire and Rescue and many others. By hosting it in the evening, both pupils and parents could attend and work together to work out the path they need to take to help their son/daughter thrive in a role they are passionate about.
Viki Foster, Careers Leader at Withernsea High School, commented: “We were delighted to welcome Graham to Withernsea High School again to talk to our Board for Change and launch National Careers Week. The students were engaged in the assembly and put many questions to Graham ranging from his career journey to politics and finally how to effectively make change as a Board. The message that Graham delivered to the students was that everyone has their own skill set and everyone can make a positive difference to society - something which we aim to instil into our young people through the careers programme. We would like to extend our thanks to Graham for giving his time to talk to our students about a subject he was clearly passionate about.”
Graham Stuart said: “Withernsea High School is doing a great job of showing our young people as many options as possible for the future. I was delighted to meet them for Careers Week to tell them about my own career journey, and hear about their own aspirations for the future. Viki Foster does a brilliant job to inspire the children and they are clearly engaged in the work she is doing.”
