Graham Stuart is asking residents to help make local transport better by telling him about problems with buses, roads, potholes, rail links and access to local services.

Residents can complete Graham’s transport survey at grahamstuart.com/transport.

The survey asks residents what transport they use, what problems they face, which roads, routes or services are affected, how often the problem happens, and what impact it has on daily life.

It covers buses, roads, potholes, road safety, parking, local trains, national trains including Hull Trains, York to Hull rail via Beverley, taxis, community transport, school and college transport, cycling, walking and access to local services.

Graham has written to Mayor Luke Campbell following a constructive meeting with the Mayor’s new Director of Transport, Chris Blucke.

In his letter, Graham welcomed the appointment and set out the transport issues residents have raised with him.

Graham said it was positive that the Combined Authority now has senior transport leadership in place.

He also made clear that rural and coastal communities must be properly reflected as the Combined Authority prepares its first three-year transport delivery plan.

Graham had already raised local transport with Mayor Campbell in December, including the need for better links between Hull, Beverley and York.

Graham has also seen how strongly residents feel about potholes and poor road conditions.

In his recent potholes survey, 56 out of 66 residents who responded said they were very concerned about road safety because of potholes and poor road conditions.

Residents raised problems across Beverley and Holderness, including Withernsea, Cherry Burton, Hedon, Aldbrough, Keyingham, Sunk Island, Leconfield, Preston and Patrington.

Graham has submitted 66 reports of potholes to Cllr Paul West at East Riding of Yorkshire Council to make sure residents’ concerns are being heard at the highest level.

Many residents also told Graham that short-term patching is not good enough when the same potholes return within weeks.

Graham has also been campaigning to protect Hull Trains’ direct London link, make the long-term case for York to Hull rail via Beverley, oppose higher fuel costs for rural drivers, support better cycle routes and press for road safety improvements.

Graham said:

“Transport is the tool that unlocks everything else.

“It means getting to work, school, college, hospital appointments, shops and family.

“These are all good things. Transport is what makes them possible.

“Different bodies are responsible for different parts of transport.

“The Government has to understand the impact of fuel costs on rural drivers. Councils need to stay on top of potholes. The Mayor has an important role in making sure current routes make sense and setting out a proper vision for how transport can strengthen Hull and the East Riding.

“People are not asking for miracles. They want roads that are safe, buses that turn up, rail links that are protected and a transport system that understands how rural life actually works.

“My job is to be on residents’ side and make sure their voices are heard by all of them.

“That is why I am asking residents to fill in my survey.

“If there is a transport problem where you live, please tell me at grahamstuart.com/transport.”
