Defence School of Transport (DST) Leconfield has prepared 617 civilians to get their HGV license as part of the HGV Skills Boot Camp since 2021.
Skills Bootcamps were set up in April 2021 to help the UK build its base of qualified people for key jobs, including business, digital and HGV drivers.
The Bootcamps are intensive courses of up to 16 weeks for people returning to HGV driving, those looking to upgrade their licenses, novices and more besides.
DST Leconfield was formed in 1996 to provide driver training for the Army, Royal Marines and Royal Air Force. It is the largest residential driving school in the world, with 4.75 million miles driven by its students. It has a permanent establishment of 173 military and 546 civilian staff.
DST Leconfield is a visible reminder of East Yorkshire’s Armed Forces community and regularly engages with the local community, including its annual Armed Forces Day events.
Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley and Holderness, said, “DST Leconfield is doing a fantastic job for both our military and, now, our civilian drivers.
“It’s a huge employer locally and puts so much back into our local economy and community including supporting our blue light services.
“It was a great pleasure to meet Mark and Nigel and see some of the first class training that they provide.”
Mark Smith, Director of Mainstream Training, said “Welcoming Graham today has been fantastic. Getting him into the driver's seat and working with our instructors allowed him to experience firsthand the excellent driver training we provide at our Skills Bootcamps.
“Many of our students go on to secure high-paying roles in the transport and logistics sector, and we’re proud to equip them with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed. Efficient transport is the lifeblood of the economy, and we part of keeping it moving forward.”
