Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley and Holderness, today asked what was being done to improve efficiencies and consider the needs of rural areas when strengthening flood defences.
During a Westminster Hall Debate in Parliament on the future of flood and water management legislation Graham said, “The summer of 2007 represented dark times for the people in East Yorkshire, but I am pleased that in the aftermath of such devastation we have been able to come together and share a greater sense of community and work together to solve our problems.
"Local towns and villages in my constituency have done more than just complain about flooding risks, they have come together, rolled up their sleeves, and done the hard work to prevent it from happening again."
Graham supported the Burstwick United Flood Action Group in inviting Richard Benyon MP, the Minister in charge of flooding, to open the new flood defence scheme for the village. During the debate Graham reiterated his hope that the Minister would be able to attend.
Finally, he encouraged all of the various agencies involved in flood prevention to avoid complacency and do everything possible to ensure proper maintenance was carried out so that the flooding of 2007 would not be repeated.
