York to Hull Railway

Graham Stuart MP is championing the reinstatement of the rail line between York and Hull. He is working closely with the Minsters Rail Campaign to make this happen. York to Hull Rail will deliver exactly what it says on the tin: a fast, resilient and sustainable connection linking two great cities and the communities between them.

There is a missing link in East Yorkshire’s transport system. Without reinstating this route, our region’s ambitions for sustainable growth, improved public transport and stronger economic performance will be held back.

Why it matters

York to Hull Rail will:

  • Reduce car dependency and relieve pressure on the congested A1079
  • Improve access to affordable housing, education and healthcare across the region
  • Support economic development and unlock growth across East and North Yorkshire
  • Provide a resilient alternative rail route less vulnerable to flooding and disruption

This is not a campaign driven by rail nostalgia. It is a practical response to real transport, economic and climate challenges.

Real progress

Working with Minsters Rail and engineering consultants AECOM, Graham helped secure funding to produce the Strategic Outline Business Case which was completed and submitted in 2022.

The route has strong public backing, supported by surveys conducted by Graham and at public events.

Positive engagement continues with East Riding of Yorkshire Council and the new Hull and East Yorkshire Combined Authority to secure funding for the next stage. The critical next step is commissioning the full Outline Business Case.

What happens next

A funded Outline Business Case is the gateway to construction and delivery. The campaign is close to success and this work is the key step that will determine the future of the York to Hull Rail link.

Graham will continue pressing nationally and locally to ensure that this transformational project becomes reality.
